For more than 20 years, Hanesbrands has had a formal partnership with Carver High School in Winston-Salem, N.C., that has helped significantly improve attendance, academic achievement, and graduation rates at the school. Hanesbrands employees have donated thousands of hours of volunteer time, and the company has contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars in direct funding.

We believe the Carver partnership, the first of its kind in North Carolina, is a model for business/education partnerships across the United States. The partnership has created numerous ongoing programs, including student and teacher recognition programs, mentoring initiatives and the “It’s My Call” drug awareness and testing program that served as a model that is now used throughout the Forsyth County school district.

Hard-fought achievements by Carver Nation -- as the students, faculty and administrators refer to themselves – include:

  • As of 2009, honor roll achievement has increased to 31 percent from a low of 18 percent when the partnership began in 1985.
  • The graduation rate has improved to 72.3 percent, which is above the 71 percent state average.
  • Attendance rates have increased to more than 90 percent.
  • College entrance test scores have increased by 15 percent since the partnership began.
  • The percentage of students attending some type of post-secondary program after graduation has increased by 15 points to 80 percent in the past 15 years.

We are proud to be a member of Carver Nation.
